Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a small island about 5.6 km northwest of Stone Town, Zanzibar. Despite its name, the island was never used as a prison for criminals. It was originally used as a detention center for rebellious slaves in the 1860s. Later, in the 1890s, the British built a prison on the island, but it was used as a quarantine station for yellow fever patients instead of a penal colony.
